ABOUT JACQUI GIBBONS
I trained as a yoga teacher on triyoga’s two-year, 390 hours diploma, studying under Carlos Pomeda, Jeff Phenix and Susannah Hoffman. I have practised yoga for 18 years and practise devotedly every morning. I teach a grounded yet flowing class where we move with grace, breathe with ease, find stillness, seek the truth of our Self, and smile! I combine the philosophy and meditation of traditions such as Tantra and classical yoga with the asana and pranayama of Hatha. I believe yoga is not complete without meditation, seeking the core of who we are, our true nature of love and bliss. I’m also very down-to-earth, and hopefully I make these teachings accessible and understandable.
I constantly further my practice, seeking knowledge from both teachers and books and from within, to listen to the truths which we only hear when we put down the books and look inside, in meditation. My own current class teachers are Erika Tourell, Anna Ashby and Jeff Phenix. Some of the workshops I’ve attended in the past year include Christopher Hareesh Wallace (tantric texts, practices and meditation), Sally Kempton (meditation and tantric goddesses), James French, Lisa Sanfillipo, Leila Sadhegee, Dr Jason Birch (medieval hatha texts), Alexandria Crow (teachers’ workshops) and Andrew McGonigle (anatomy).
I qualified as an Ayurvedic practitioner in 2008, training for two years with Vaidya Atreya Smith of the European Institute of Vedic Studies (EIVS), followed by 200 hours with Dr Sunil V Joshi of the Vinayak Ayurveda and Panchakarma Research Foundation in Nagpur, India. For seven years I held a Saturday clinic at Maitri Natural Health Centre, south London, then briefly at triyoga in Camden in 2017. I no longer offer consultations.
For 20 years I’ve worked as a journalist, and still do. I teach yoga on the side, as my passion and my calling. I first trained as a teacher in 2005-2007 and I taught a corporate class for two years, but gave it up to train in Ayurveda. I continued to teach one-to-one lessons to clients, and I never stopped my own daily practice and personal study. It’s my first love, and I felt called to train more thoroughly in 2016, opting for triyoga’s two-year diploma. Actually I don’t know what took me so long! (Life, I suppose.)
